RYA Powerboat Training

Meet Our Chief Powerboat Instructor Oonie Werngren

With over five years of training experience at Colne Yacht Club, Oonie Werngren has successfully guided more than 100 students to RYA qualifications. A lifelong sailor with countless hours on the water, Oonie combines deep practical knowledge with a friendly, safety-focused teaching style that makes every course enjoyable and confidence-building.

Training is carried out on our new 5.4-metre Highfield RIB, Tango 1 a powerful, stable, and responsive boat that provides the perfect platform for hands-on learning on the Colne.


Course Details
Powerboat Taster Session

Duration: 2 hours

Overview: A relaxed introduction to powerboating, including a trip down the river.

Cost: £58 per person

RYA Level 1 Start Powerboating

Aim: A practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. Conducted in a Club RIB.

Student Ratio: 3:1  |  Duration: 1 day

Content: Launch & recovery, preparation of boat and crew, basic boat handling, picking up and securing to a buoy, leaving and coming alongside, and man overboard drills.

Minimum Age: 8 years

Endorsements:

  • Ages 8-11: Must operate under supervision of a responsible adult on board.
  • Ages 12-15: May helm only under responsible adult supervision.

Cost: CYC Members £140 / Non-members £215 (£140 + £75 temporary membership)

RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling

Assumed Experience: None

Content: Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, coming alongside, man overboard recovery. Covers seamanship, low-speed manoeuvring, planing speed, and collision regulations.

Qualification: RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate (basis of International Certificate of Competence)

Training: Conducted in a RIB with a qualified RYA Instructor and full safety equipment.

Tuition: 16 hours practical; 3 students per instructor.

Format: Two consecutive days or five evenings (over five weeks)

Minimum Age: 12 (under 15s must be supervised by a responsible adult)

Cost: CYC Members £248 / Non-members £323 (£248 + £75 temporary membership)
